If a doctor has ever asked you to keep an eye on your blood pressure at home, you've probably wondered why the watch already on your wrist can't just do it for you. This week a startup began taking $399 pre-orders for a ring that promises exactly that: real systolic and diastolic numbers, no cuff, no calibration. Before you decide whether to believe it, there's a free piece of information sitting in plain sight — Apple has spent years and a fortune on health sensors and chose not to make that claim, and that silence tells you more than any review will.

The Claim Apple Quietly Declined to Make

Here is what was announced, based on reporting from 9to5Mac and CNET this week. A startup called Vital Signals, led by CEO Tom Moss, opened pre-sales on July 16 for something called the Signal Ring. It is $399, delivery is promised for October, and there is no subscription — which, in a category that has grown fond of monthly fees, is worth noting.

The claim is the interesting part. Vital Signals says the ring can measure blood pressure "as accurately as a traditional arm cuff without the need for any calibration," and shows systolic and diastolic readings in a companion app — from on-demand measurements you take sitting still, plus periodic passive scans through the day.

I can't tell you whether that's true. Nobody outside the company can yet. But there is a way to think about claims like this that doesn't require you to know anything about sensors, and it works on every health gadget you will be sold for the rest of your life.

Look at what the biggest company in the category chose not to say.

Apple has the best sensor engineering team in consumer hardware, roughly unlimited money, and a decade of experience getting health features through the FDA. They have shipped an ECG. They have shipped irregular-rhythm notifications, FDA-cleared. They have shipped sleep apnea notifications.

And on blood pressure — the single most requested health feature on any wearable, in a category worth billions — Apple shipped an alert that you might have hypertension. Not a number. A tap on the wrist saying "go get this checked."

That is not Apple being slow. That is the most capable team in the industry looking at the same problem and deciding the strong version wasn't ready to claim. When a company with every commercial incentive to own a feature ships the weaker version instead, that decision is free information. Most people never read it, because a product that doesn't exist doesn't get a headline.

None of which proves a startup can't have solved it. Small teams do leapfrog large ones. It just means the burden of proof sits higher than a press release, and right now the press release is all there is.

The part everyone reads backwards

There's a second tell in this story, and it hides inside a word people take as a selling point: calibration.

Samsung's watch, which does give an actual blood pressure number, has to be calibrated against a real arm cuff first — and re-calibrated periodically. Most people read that as a limitation. The Signal Ring says it needs none, and most people read that as an upgrade.

Turn it around. Calibration is the device admitting it's estimating, and anchoring that estimate to something known to be true. It's the step where the device checks its own work against reality. "No calibration required" is the same sentence as "no reference point" — you're being offered convenience, and what's been removed to create it is the audit.

Maybe they genuinely solved it, in which case calibration-free is a real breakthrough and I'll say so in October. But when a health device advertises the removal of the step where it verifies itself, that is the moment to slow down rather than lean in.

So I'm not saying this is vapor. I'm saying four specific things are missing from the public record, and every one of them is what you'd want before putting $399 down on a device that produces a number you might make a medical decision with.

What isn't there yet:

  • No FDA clearance. The company describes the device as "investigational" and says it is still pursuing clearance. For something that outputs a blood pressure number rather than a general wellness score, that isn't paperwork — it's the difference between a regulated measurement and an estimate.

  • No independent validation. This one needs care, because there is a study. Vital Signals says it ran a 451-person, multi-site trial that meets ISO 81060-2, the accuracy standard used for blood pressure cuffs. That is a real number, and frankly more than most pre-order hardware discloses. But it is the company's own study, it hasn't been published as a peer-reviewed paper, and nobody outside the company has tested the device.

  • No sensor detail or battery life. We don't know how it takes the measurement.

Those three phrases get collapsed together all the time, and keeping them apart is most of the skill here. A company study is the company grading its own homework — useful, and not nothing. Independent validation is somebody with no stake in the outcome running the test and publishing it. Regulatory clearance is the FDA agreeing the thing can be sold as a measuring device. Vital Signals has the first. It does not yet have the second or third, and it is the second and third that make a number safe to act on.

None of that makes the company wrong. It makes the claim unconfirmed, which is a perfectly normal state for a product that hasn't shipped. The problem is only that you're being asked to pay now and find out in October.

One more thing worth noticing: who is this actually for?

Offered gently, because it applies to me as much as anyone. If a doctor has told you to track your blood pressure, you already own a cuff and you have instructions, and this ring isn't really aimed at you — your problem was solved years ago for about seventy dollars. The people a $399 convenient reading is aimed at are mostly the rest of us, checking out of a general worry rather than a specific instruction.

And that's worth sitting with, because more frequent numbers from a device nobody has verified don't produce peace of mind. They produce more numbers to feel uncertain about, which is the opposite of what you were shopping for.

Bobby's Verdict

Best for: Nobody yet — not at pre-order. If it ships in October with clearance and independent testing behind it, this becomes a genuinely interesting product and I'll cover it again then.

Skip if: You are being asked to pay $399 today for an October delivery on a medical measurement claim that no independent party has checked. Which is to say: this week, everyone.

Setup difficulty: Not applicable yet. Nothing has shipped.

Monthly cost: $399 one time, no subscription, per the company.

Privacy note: Blood pressure history is medical data. Before any health device gets your numbers, find out where they are stored, whether they leave your phone, and whether you can export and delete them. A company taking pre-orders has no track record on any of that yet.

My take: I don't think there's anything shady happening here — this is how hardware startups raise money, and the idea is a good one. But there's a line worth drawing between wellness gadgets and measurement devices. If a sleep tracker guesses wrong, you lose nothing but a number you didn't need. If a blood pressure device guesses wrong, you either worry about a problem you don't have or feel reassured about one you do. That second category has earned the right to make me wait. Let October come, let somebody independent test it, and let the pre-orderers do the beta testing — which, when a device hasn't shipped, is the actual product you'd be buying.

Your 10-minute check: a blood pressure reading your doctor will actually trust

The unglamorous truth is that a $70 cuff used correctly beats a $399 ring used hopefully. Most home readings are thrown off by technique, not equipment. This is the American Heart Association's guidance, and every step below is on their own instruction sheet:

  1. No caffeine, exercise, or smoking for 30 minutes beforehand. These move the number enough to make a reading meaningless.

  2. Sit quietly for five minutes first. Feet flat on the floor, back supported, legs uncrossed. Don't talk during this or during the reading.

  3. Bare arm, resting at heart level. Over a sleeve changes the reading. Let your arm rest on a table rather than holding it up.

  4. Put the cuff on properly — snug enough that a finger fits underneath, with the bottom edge just above the bend of your elbow.

  5. Take two readings, a minute apart, and write both down. Single readings scatter more than people expect.

  6. Measure at the same time each day, morning and evening if your doctor asked for both.

  7. Bring the log to your appointment. A two-week record is worth more to a clinician than any one number, and far more than a trend line from a device they don't recognize.

That is the whole routine. It costs nothing if you already own a cuff, and it is what a doctor can actually act on.

If you don't own one, two things matter. First, get an upper-arm cuff. The AHA is blunt about this: "Wrist and finger monitors are not recommended. They give less reliable readings."

Second — and this is the whole argument of this issue applied to your own shopping — buy one that appears on an independent validation list, not one that says "clinically accurate" on the box. Two exist and both are free: STRIDE BP, which lists devices with peer-reviewed validation studies behind them, and ValidateBP, run in association with the American Medical Association — search "ValidateBP" and use their device finder. If the model you're looking at isn't on either list, that tells you something.

Two upper-arm models that are on ValidateBP today: the Omron 5 Series (BP7255), around $70, and the Withings BPM Connect, around $125. Both write readings into Apple Health automatically, so the log builds itself. Omron also documents syncing to Samsung Health; Withings I couldn't confirm for Samsung, so check that directly if you're on a Galaxy. Basic validated models start around $45–$60 at list price and turn up nearer $30–$40 on sale, so there's no need to spend $125 unless you want the extras.

What to watch

  • October: Whether the Signal Ring ships on schedule, and whether it arrives with FDA clearance and published validation. I'll return to it either way.

  • Ongoing: The pattern, not just this product. "Cuffless blood pressure" is about to be a marketing phrase on a lot of boxes. The question to ask every time is the same: cleared by whom, tested by whom, published where.

Limitations — what not to assume

  • Don't assume no FDA mention means no FDA clearance. It means the reporting didn't say. That is a gap in what we know, not proof of anything.

  • Don't assume calibration-free is impossible. It's a strong claim, not an absurd one. It just hasn't been shown publicly.

  • Don't assume your current device is doing more than it is. Which brings us to the Apple Watch.

  • Nothing here is medical advice. If you are monitoring blood pressure, your doctor's instructions beat anything a newsletter or a device tells you.

SUPPORTING FEATURE

What Your Watch Actually Does About Blood Pressure — Apple and Samsung Take Opposite Routes

This is the part I suspect a lot of readers have wrong, and it isn't your fault — the marketing does not go out of its way to clarify it.

Apple Watch Series 9 or later and Ultra 2 or later can detect signs of possible hypertension over time and send you an alert. Note what's not on that list: the Apple Watch SE doesn't have it, and neither do earlier Series models — so a lot of readers wearing a perfectly good watch simply don't have this feature at all.

And on the watches that do have it, it is an alert. Not a reading. There is no systolic-over-diastolic number produced by the watch's own sensor, on any model.

That is a meaningful feature and I don't want to undersell it. Hypertension is genuinely common and genuinely quiet — plenty of people have it for years without knowing. A watch that taps you on the wrist and says "this pattern is worth getting checked" is doing something useful, and for some readers it will be the nudge that starts a conversation with a doctor.

But it is a smoke detector, not a thermometer. It tells you to go look. It does not tell you the number.

Two things worth knowing. It has to be switched on — it isn't automatic. And after you set it up there's a 30-day data-gathering period before it can generate its first notification, so if you turn it on today, nothing will happen for a month. That's normal, not a fault.

If you want an actual number on your wrist, there is a route — it just isn't the watch's own sensor. Pair a validated cuff like an Omron or Withings, and its app writes real readings into Apple Health automatically. You get the number and the chart; the cuff does the measuring. That's the honest version of "using your Apple Watch to track blood pressure," and it's a good setup.

Samsung went the other way, and the details are the most useful part of this whole issue. Samsung Health Monitor on Galaxy Watch does give you an actual blood pressure number, it did come to the US on 31 March 2026, and it works on Galaxy Watch 4 and later. The catch is exactly the thing the Signal Ring claims to have solved: you must calibrate it against a real arm cuff first, and re-calibrate every 28 days, because the watch is estimating from a baseline you gave it rather than measuring cold.

And here's the part almost nobody mentions: that feature is not FDA-cleared in the US. Samsung ships it by classifying it as a general-wellness feature, which is exempt from clearance. So the one big-name watch that hands you a blood pressure number does it without regulatory sign-off, and only by anchoring itself to a cuff every four weeks.

Line those up and the landscape is clear. Apple declined to give a number at all. Samsung gives one, but only with a cuff behind it and without FDA clearance. A startup now says it can give you the number with no cuff and no anchor — the exact step neither of the two largest companies has taken. That's the claim to be careful with. Not because it's impossible, but because it's the hard part, and it's hard for everybody.

One practical action this week: On your iPhone, open Health → tap your picture or initials, top right → Health Checklist → Set Up under Hypertension Notifications. Setup happens on the phone, not the watch. While you're in there, do the same on your parent's phone if you set theirs up. Two minutes, costs nothing, and it's the highest-value blood pressure thing most readers can do today — just remember the 30-day wait before it has anything to say.

Quick Win 1 — Get the water out of your Apple Watch speaker

If your watch has ever sounded muffled after a shower, a swim, or washing up, there is a built-in fix and most people never find it.

It's called Water Lock. It does two things: locks the screen so water can't trigger taps, and then physically pushes water out of the speaker with sound. It's on every Apple Watch from Series 2 onward, and it turns itself on automatically when you start a swim workout.

To use it manually: press the side button for Control Center, tap the water droplet icon, and the screen locks. To clear the water: press and hold the Digital Crown for a few seconds. You'll hear a run of tones and see water bead out of the speaker holes. It is oddly satisfying.

One honest caveat: this is not waterproofing. Water resistance weakens as a watch ages, and chlorine and salt water are harder on it than the rating suggests. Water Lock helps it dry — it does not make an older watch safe to swim in.

Quick Win 2 — Check the publisher before you buy an e-book

9to5Mac reported this week that fake, AI-generated copies of real books are appearing on Apple Books, sometimes within days of the genuine release — a writer found ten counterfeit versions of her own book. The fakes copy the title and often something close to the cover.

Before buying, check two things on the listing: the publisher name and the publication date. A real book from a real publisher shows both, and they match what you'd find on the author's own site. A counterfeit usually has an unfamiliar or missing publisher and a suspiciously recent date. Ten seconds, and it saves you paying for machine-generated nonsense with a familiar cover.

The iOS 27 public beta

Apple released the iOS 27 public beta this week, and public means anyone can install it — no developer account, no hunting around. You will see people talking about the new Siri.

I'd leave it alone on the phone you rely on.

Public betas are genuinely useful and Apple isn't doing anything wrong by shipping one. But "public" describes who can get it, not how finished it is. Betas break app compatibility in ways that are hard to predict — and the apps most likely to break are the ones with unusual requirements, which includes some health, hearing aid, and medical device companions. Battery life is usually worse. And going back to the stable version is not a single button; it's a restore from backup, which is an afternoon and assumes you have a good backup.

If you have a spare iPhone in a drawer, install it there and enjoy yourself. If you have one phone, and it's the phone your family calls you on and your pharmacy texts, wait for the finished release this fall. You will get every one of these features, on a version that has had a few more months of other people finding the problems.

Nothing is wrong with being curious. This is just a case where being second costs you nothing.
