If your windows have been shut for days, you already know why: 50 large uncontained fires burning

in the Pacific Northwest, poor air quality forecast into Wednesday for Portland, Seattle, Boise and

Salt Lake City, and Canadian smoke still drifting across the Midwest and Northeast. And if your own

air is fine but your mother's isn't — if you're reading this to figure out what to tell someone two

time zones away — that's the harder version of this problem, and I've tried to write for you too.

Either way it ends in the same place: four tabs open, every one of them showing the same 99.97% in

the same big type, and you trying to work out which box is worth $300. So I went looking for what

that number actually promises. It promises nothing about your room. Two of the three things that

help most this week don't cost anything at all.

THE SHORT VERSION

  • What matters: "99.97%" describes air that passes through the filter. It says nothing

about how much of your room's air does. That second thing is the whole game, and it has its own

number: CADR.

  • Who should care: Worth being precise, because the common shorthand is wrong. EPA's age line

is 65, not 50 — and its stated reason is that adults 65+ "are more likely to already have

chronic heart or lung disease." So the age is a stand-in for the condition. Asthma, COPD,

cardiovascular disease and diabetes put you in the sensitive group at any age. If you have one,

the birthday is beside the point. The AQI number where guidance changes is 101.

  • What to do next: Set your furnace fan from "Auto" to "On," check the AirNow Fire and Smoke

Map for your actual address, and if you buy anything, buy it for the bedroom — not the house.

HERO DEEP DIVE

You're not buying clean air. You're buying speed.

"Air purifier" sounds like it describes an end state — you run it, the air becomes pure. That

isn't what's happening. On a smoke day you're in a race: smoke is coming into your house through

every gap around the windows and doors, continuously, and the machine is pulling it back out,

continuously. What you get is not purity. It's an equilibrium — wherever those two rates

happen to balance.

Which is why the number on the front of the box is the wrong one to shop on. 99.97% is a fact

about the filter media — it's how much the material catches from the air that passes through

it. It is not a claim about your room, and you'll notice no manufacturer makes one. None of them

promise your bedroom will reach a given air quality level, because that depends on your house,

not their product.

The number that's actually on your side of the race is CADR — Clean Air Delivery Rate. It

measures how much clean air the unit actually delivers per minute. Machines carry separate CADR

numbers for smoke, dust and pollen — smoke is the one you want, and it's always the lowest of

the three.

Then the sizing rule, which has a wrinkle worth knowing. AHAM, the industry body that certifies

these ratings, says a smoke CADR of about two-thirds the room's square footage is enough for

ordinary indoor smoke. **For wildfire smoke specifically, AHAM raises it to match the room's square

footage one-for-one.** So a 300 sq ft bedroom wants a smoke CADR near 300, not 200 — and if you see

the two-thirds figure quoted on a box or in a review, that's the everyday number, not the

wildfire one. A superb filter in a machine that barely moves air is a quiet way to spend $300 and

feel no different.

If you're buying a rate, and you're racing against how fast smoke enters a space, then **the size

of the room is a lever you already own and it's free.** Halve the room and you halve the machine

you need — at a one-for-one sizing rule, exactly halve it. So when I say buy for the bedroom and

not the house, I don't mean it as the budget option. I mean it's the structurally correct move.

You spend a third of the day in there with the door shut, which makes it the easiest room in the

house to actually win in.

Two more things worth knowing before you buy:

"HEPA-type" is a disclaimer wearing a credential's clothes. True HEPA is an actual standard —

99.97% at the hardest particle size to catch. "HEPA-type," "HEPA-style," and

"HEPA-like" are not standards at all, which is the whole point of the wording; figures

commonly reported for them land around 85–95%, though nobody is obliged to hit any number.

Check the box for the word "True."

HEPA catches particles, not gases. The smell of smoke is largely gases and VOCs, which HEPA

does essentially nothing about — that's what activated carbon is for. If odor is what's

bothering you, a carbon-free unit will disappoint you even while it's working correctly on the

thing that matters more for your lungs.

One honest expectation-setter: independent studies of portable air cleaners during smoke events

land anywhere from about 38% to 84% reduction in indoor PM2.5, depending on the room, the

machine, and how leaky the house is. That spread is the race showing up in the data rather than

sloppy measurement. Even the low end of it is protection I'd take. It is not a sealed room,

though — you lower the equilibrium, you don't end it.

Why any of this matters medically: wildfire smoke's harm concentrates in PM2.5, particles fine

enough to reach the deep lung and enter the bloodstream. A 2026 study in Science Advances

estimated wildfire-smoke PM2.5 contributed to roughly 24,100 deaths a year in the contiguous U.S.

between 2006 and 2020. That's a population-level figure, not a forecast about anyone's week — but

it's why this pollutant gets treated differently from ordinary household dust.

What to look for on the box: the words "True HEPA," a published smoke CADR at or near your

room's square footage, and activated carbon if odor matters to you. I'm deliberately not naming a

model this week — the right unit is a function of your room size, and a recommendation that

ignores that is the exact mistake this issue is about.

- Best for: One bedroom, or the room you actually spend evenings in. Buy for a room, not a house.

- Skip if: The box says "HEPA-type," there's no published smoke CADR figure, or it's an ionizer/ozone generator rather than a filter. A unit that won't tell you its CADR is telling you something.

  1. Look up your address on the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map and note today's number.

  2. Close windows and doors on the smoke side of the house.

  3. Put the unit in the bedroom, not the living room. Smaller closed room, winnable race.

  4. Keep it 6–12 inches off the wall so it isn't choking on its own intake.

  5. Run high for two or three hours, then drop to a speed quiet enough that you'll actually leave it on overnight.

  6. Shut the bedroom door. This is free and it does more than one speed setting.

  7. Write the install date on the filter edge in marker, and set a 30-day phone reminder rather than trusting the indicator light.

If the room isn't yours. Steps 1, 2 and 6 are the whole phone call, and none of them require

anyone to buy anything. Pull up their address on the map yourself first so you're both looking at

the same number — it's a much easier conversation than "is it smoky there?" Then: windows closed

on the smoke side, bedroom door shut at night. If they're going to end up with a machine, the

room-size question is the one to settle before the shopping starts, not after.

What to watch

Check the Fire and Smoke Map in the morning rather than judging by how the sky looks — haze and

AQI don't track each other reliably. 101 is the threshold where guidance shifts: at 101–150,

EPA's category is "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups." Above 101 the standing advice for that group

is to stay indoors with windows closed. Whether you're in it is a question of conditions as much

as age — 65+ is the age line, but asthma, COPD, heart disease and diabetes count on their own.

What not to assume

A purifier doesn't fix a house letting smoke in around old windows and doors — that's the other

side of the race, and it's usually the bigger one. It doesn't replace

an N95 if you have to be outside a while. And it doesn't make outdoor exercise a good idea on a

bad-air day. If you have a lung or heart condition, treat this as a supplement to whatever plan

your doctor already gave you for bad-air days, not a substitute for calling them if you're

symptomatic.

SUPPORTING FEATURE

The word "Auto" is doing something different than you think

Your furnace or central AC already moves the air of every room through a filter. It is, by a wide

margin, the highest-CADR machine in your house. Most people leave the fan on "Auto."

On any normal day "Auto" is the right, efficient choice — the blower runs only while the system is

actively heating or cooling. On a smoke day it quietly means "filter only occasionally." The

word sounds like intelligence and is functionally abdication. Switch the fan to "On" and the

whole house filters around the clock instead of in bursts. Fifteen seconds, costs nothing.

But do this first, or the fan setting can work against you. EPA is explicit about the order:

*"If your HVAC system or window air conditioner has a fresh air option (meaning it pulls in air

from the outside), turn it off, close the intake, or set the system to 'recirculate' mode."*

Many systems pull some outdoor air by design — an intake damper, an economizer, a fresh-air lever

on a window unit. Running the blower continuously with that open doesn't filter your house, it

imports the smoke on a schedule. Close it first, then switch the fan to "On." If you don't know

whether you have one, that's the question worth asking a professional this week.

The filter itself matters too. MERV 13 is EPA's stated recommendation for wildfire smoke —

"preferably rated MERV 13 or higher" — and most systems run one without trouble provided you

change it often. But there's a caveat the upgrade guides bury, and it's the same trade-off as the

purifier aisle, just louder: denser media means less air moved. HVAC contractors routinely

warn that older systems and lower-powered blower motors can struggle with the added restriction,

which strains the blower. I haven't found EPA putting a cutoff year on that, so treat it as trade

experience rather than a rule. EPA's own advice is the safe version: if your system is older or

you're unsure, have a professional check it before you jump to MERV 13.

One action this week: walk to the thermostat, switch the fan to "On." Then look at the filter

you have — the MERV number is printed on the cardboard edge, along with the size you'll need if

you decide to replace it. Buy that one locally if you can; filter sizes are unforgiving and a

wrong-size delivery helps nobody.

2. The taped-together box that outperforms its price — optional

This is the one I didn't expect to be writing about. A Corsi-Rosenthal box is a 20-inch box

fan with four MERV 13 furnace filters taped into a cube.

The design's originators put it just under $100 in parts; you'll see $70 quoted around the

internet, so call it somewhere under a hundred and twenty minutes of work. EPA has published its

own research on DIY box-fan air cleaners and found them a more cost-effective way to reduce

indoor wildfire smoke than higher-priced commercial units.

The box wins because it is almost entirely fan. A premium purifier spends its budget on the

enclosure, the display, the app, and running quietly — and most of those either restrict airflow

or don't add any. Refinement in this category largely means moving less air. The ugly option is

competitive because it skipped all of it.

Two honest caveats. EPA is explicit that it is not recommended as a permanent alternative to a

commercial air cleaner — it's the option for when one isn't available or affordable. And it is a

box fan with filters taped to it: not attractive, not quiet. For a spare room, a basement, or one

smoke week, that trade looks very different than it does in a living room.

SKIP THIS FOR NOW

But a pendant moves almost no air, so whatever its filter media does, its delivery rate is near

same respiratory irritant found in outdoor smog. EPA and Health Canada both caution that

ozone-generating devices can worsen indoor air in occupied spaces. California legislated it: under

AB 2276, indoor air cleaners sold in the state are capped at 0.05 ppm ozone emissions and require

CARB certification.

One more wrinkle worth knowing: ozone reacts with terpenes — common in lotions, perfumes and

scented personal care products — and those reactions can form formaldehyde and additional PM2.5.

Which is precisely backwards from the goal.

If you want protection while you're out on a smoke day, a well-fitted N95 does the job these

promise, for a few dollars. No judgment if you already own one — just don't count on it as the

plan.
